Newcastle United transfer round-up: Magpies linked with Nick Pope and Johan Manzambi alternatives.
Newcastle United have been dealt their second major transfer blow of the summer.
Despite agreeing a £49million deal to sign Freiberg midfielder Johan Manzambi, the player himself has opted to join Premier League rivals Aston Villa instead.
It comes after the Magpies thought they had a deal in place to sign Spanish winger Victor Munoz, only for him to join Liverpool.
Newcastle are now moving on to other targets. With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest rumours:
Newcastle United enquire about Japanese goalkeeper
Newcastle have reportedly enquired about Parma and Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The Magpies have already signed a goalkeeper this summer after bringing in 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims for £18million but are open to signing another amid big question marks over Nick Pope’s future.
As per Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Newcastle, along with Leeds United have reached out Parma regarding Suzuki.
“As far as Suzuki’s transfer is concerned, Parma are in no hurry; they’re waiting for the best offer,” Moretto said on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel. “Whoever offers the most, the most convincing proposal, will be the one accepted.
"Then, of course, the player is ready to take this step forward in his career, but as things stand, in addition to the various clubs that have been talked about a lot, I’d add another Premier League club that has made an enquiry about Suzuki, and that is Newcastle. Newcastle have enquired about Suzuki’s situation.
“I’ll reiterate: there’s Newcastle, and there are many others – Leeds, and many more. In any case, Suzuki will choose the best project and Parma will choose the best offer from a financial point of view.”
Newcastle United interested in another Parma star
Having missed out on Freiberg midfielder Johan Manzambi to Aston Villa and Bruno Guimaraes’ future still uncertain, the Magpies are said to have registered an interest in Mandela Keita.
The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the Serie A club after joining from Royal Antwerp FC in his homeland of Belgium. It’s been suggested that Keita is available between £17million to £21million.
