Understandably, Leeds United are in the market for new defenders this summer.
Matt Targett is a potential option to provide cover at left-back for the Whites, whilst a new centre-back is also clearly on the agenda.
This comes after Pascal Struijk made the move to Brighton. How the 49ers replace Dutch defender could be one of the more important pieces of business they conduct this summer.
However, Leeds continue to find themselves linked with a centre-back who, on paper, would not make sense to sign.
Nico Elvedi once again linked with Leeds
According to the latest reports from Football Insider, Nico Elvedi is open to a move to West Yorkshire. The report claims Leeds seem happy to oblige.
United are said to have stepped up their efforts to sign the Borussia Monchengladbach centre-half.
Elvedi, 29, has just one year remaining on his deal with the Bundesliga outfit. For this reason, I’m hesitant to believe these Elvedi rumours. His agent is likely trying to drum up as much noise surrounding his client as possible.
The defender started all six of Switzerland’s games at the World Cup. So, Monchengladbach certainly won’t want to lose him for free.
If Elvedi’s agent can make it appear as though Leeds are seriously interested in him, perhaps this will benefit them in any potential talks they hold with Monchengladbach or any other potential suitor.
On top of this, Elvedi is right-footed. So as it stands, it would make no sense for United to sign him as he wouldn’t be a natural replacement for Struijk.
Furthermore, we already have Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw. All three are more than capable of playing as a right-sided centre-back.
Makes sense for Leeds to be prioritising a move for Tarik Muharemovic
Leeds are also said to be interested in Sassuolo’s Tarik Muharemovic, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Unlike the Elvedi links, the Muharemovic links make a lot of logical sense.
A 23-year-old left-footed centre-half is the exact type of profile you can imagine the 49ers targeting this summer to replace Struijk.
Whilst Muharemovic would likely slot straight into the starting XI, this would certainly not be the case with Elvedi.
According to Romano, Leeds are said to be confident of getting a deal done for Muharemovic, with two other clubs also interested in the Bosnian defender. So if this is the case, that gives me even more reason to doubt the Elvedi deal.
Unless a Bornauw is sold, for example, I can’t see us signing Elvedi given the current makeup of Daniel Farke’s squad.
