Leeds United’s defence looks set to undergo a drastic change this summer.
With Pascal Struijk moving to Brighton, Tarik Muharemovic could be set to be the Dutchman’s replacement.
Matt Targett is also someone Leeds are said to be keeping an eye on as they remain on the lookout for a backup left-back before the new season.
But another one of United’s defenders seems to be facing an uncertain future in West Yorkshire.
Sebastiaan Bornauw could be set to leave Leeds this summer
After arriving from Wolfsburg for just over £5million last summer, Sebastiaan Bornauw provided useful depth for the Whites’ backline.
Although he didn’t play much last season, with just 439 Premier League minutes to his name (Sofascore), when he did, he was solid.
Bornauw’s exceptional performance against Liverpool at Anfield on New Year’s Day was a reminder of the quality he possesses.
But according to the Daily Mail, Bornauw is one of the players who could leave Leeds this summer.
That same report also lists a number of right-footed centre-backs United have monitored or hold an interest in. These names include Ousmane Diomande, Nico Elvedi and Mariano Troilo.
Putting two and two together, it would seem that whilst a left-footed centre-back will likely be a priority to replace Struijk, Leeds are also keen to improve the quality of their depth when it comes to right-footed centre-backs.
With Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol already at the club alongside Bornauw, signing another right-footer in addition to these players makes no sense. Unless that is, Bornauw is the one to make way for any potential arrival, which would certainly be the most likely scenario.
Leeds shouldn’t spend heavily on a right-sided centre-back
Unless Bijol or Rodon leave unexpectedly, I don’t think United should be spending a large portion of their budget on a right-sided centre-back.
I’m happy with our options in that area for now. It’s the left-sided centre-back position I’d be keen to address.
With Struijk leaving, we certainly need a replacement. But we were already short in that area, so if possible, I’d sign a cheaper backup left-sided centre-back. This would be in addition to any big-money Struijk replacement we end up signing.
There is a catalogue of other positions I’d invest in before another right-footed centre-back.
Goalkeeper, another winger and another striker are just a few examples.
Unless Bornauw wants to force a move to get more gametime, that part of our defence is something I’d look to improve upon next summer rather than this one.
