Opportunity awaits for Aarons and Araujo to earn Cherries spot as Jimenez set to go

Club legend Adam Smith signed a one-year contract extension that was announced on the day that Alex Jimenez’s permanent move to the club was confirmed, as the obligation in his loan deal from AC Milan was confirmed.

But Jimenez looks set to join Fiorentina on loan with an option to buy, after he was suspended by the FA pending an investigation into social media posts involving the right back in May.

So, while Bournemouth thought they may have Smith’s long-term successor secured in Jimenez, it is back to the drawing board.

However, two previous signings who came in with an eye on displacing Smith have returned to Bournemouth from loans and, with a new coach in Marco Rose, they have an opportunity to stake their claim for the spot.

Max Aarons and Julian Araujo both had spells at Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic in Scotland last season, and club pictures on social media have shown the pair return for pre-season at the performance centre.

It is understood the next couple of weeks will be key to Bournemouth’s transfer business this summer.

Rose will be assessing the squad and taking a particular look at the players who were not regulars for the Cherries last term, to assess the depth he has on offer in his squad.

Right back will be a position that needs addressing, with only Smith available as the out-and-out right back in the squad that was around for all of last season.

He can’t be expected to play every game in a season where the Cherries could play 67 games, although that figure is more likely to be between 50 and 60, depending on how far they progress in the three cup competitions they are in, including the Europa League.

Neither Aarons nor Araujo are approaching the end of their careers, and are more likely soon to reach their peak within the coming years.

This summer presents to both a golden opportunity to earn their spot as a regular in Rose’s Cherries side.

While neither has managed to do that previously, under a new head coach and with fresh eyes in the coaching staff, they may be given plenty of game time in pre-season to not only confirm their places as a squad player this season, but also as a potential starter.

Both saw Europa League action last season with Rangers and Celtic, so will have an appreciation for the demands of that competition, which could prove to be invaluable.

Should either impress Rose and earn their place in the team, then that could save the club from dipping into the market for a right back, although there will most likely be planning for that eventuality, should they decide they need to follow Jimenez’s departure.
