Hull City owner Acun Ilicali explains logic behind £55m loan

Acun Ilicali has explained why the club has taken out a £55m bridging loan from lenders Point 72, despite the club being promoted to the Premier League.

Information published on Companies House showed the Tigers had agreed a loan against their Millhouse Woods Lane training ground in Cottingham, and the lease of the council-owned MKM Stadium.

Concerns were raised by some supporters about why the club had taken out the loan, with football finance expert Kieran Maguire suggesting it was 'strange', but Ilicali says it was a decision taken by the club's financial department to provide support.

City are due to receive their first instalment of television money from the Premier League in the next few days, which is thought to be around £30 million.

Over the course of the summer, the club have had to spend significant amounts on stadium work to meet Premier League regulations, as well as at the training ground, and those improvements will continue until the campaign begins.

While City will bank more than £200m for promotion, that is staggered over the next three years, and does not come in one lump sum, as Ilicali explains.

"Of course, we want to be stronger, and I can explain the two sides of it," the Turkish businessman said in conversation with Hull Live.

"One, we want to have a good team, and the money we're going to get from the Premier League is not going to be money where they say, 'Hey guys, get this £200m and spend as you want.'

"It's coming in the long term over the next few seasons. Of course, I can support the club from my company, but we have 40% interest rates in Turkey, and in England it is seven per cent interest, so to use money from Turkey is ridiculous when you have seven or eight per cent interest rates in England, so this is a complete choice of our financial guys.

"We have spent more than £100m for this club, and if we were not promoted, we wouldn't get any money, and we would keep on spending it to maintain our focus and love for this club.

"In terms of our financial operations, I respect my financial boys, and I would ask fans to be relaxed and just believe in us. We are trying to do some things for this club to be stronger.

"We want to spend more money on the team as soon as possible, and we just wanted that kind of support, and I think our financial guys did that."
