Newcastle United still believe they are in a position to make at least three more deals in time for the start of the season.

The Magpies are working relentlessly behind the scenes with sporting director Ross Wilson looking to tie up a deal for a new goalkeeper, a right-back and a midfielder. However, there is still plenty of distance to run in the window and further deals could be struck before the window slams shut on September 1.

The intensity of the window has picked up in the last few days with Newcastle enduring the blow of losing out on Johan Manzambi after putting up the funds to make a £49m deal with SC Freiburg. However, that money stays in the pot and Newcastle aim to make a similar signing of similar age profile as they look to inject energy into their side.

On the goalkeeper front, Newcastle must come up with a solution to find a No 1 in time for the big kick off. At the minute, that man is Nick Pope with Ewen Jaouen deemed as the youngster who will do battle with a more senior shot-stopper.

One of the key factors surrounding Eddie Howe's summer plans is retaining Bruno Guimaraes who he wants to lead the team again next season.

That will be looked upon as major coup in itself with agents and third parties doing their best to turn the player's head.

High-placed sources at Arsenal insist they have not done anything unsavoury in terms of encouraging noise around the transfer. Arsenal may still slap in an offer for Bruno before the window is out though, and Newcastle may well have a decision to make.

If they did lose Bruno the funds would again be ploughed into the squad and there would be a convincing case from Howe to sign a more experienced leader, with the step away from signing solely young stars a conversation that may need to be had.

Newcastle have lost Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali in the last few months and there is a gaping hole in the squad in terms of experience.

Howe was pleased to welcome Fabian Schar, Joelinton, Joe Willock, Lewis Hall and Jacob Ramsey as the hard work began for pre-season at the newly-named KNOX.
