Elliot Anderson could not help but mistakenly sing a Newcastle United chant after England’s semi-final win over Norway.
Newcastle United supporters are buzzing after noticing Elliot Anderson’s black-and-white Freudian slip.
As the country celebrated England’s nervy 2-1 win over Norway, a rendition of The Beatles’ classic “Hey Jude” echoed around the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Adopted by football fans across the country, any Newcastle supporter knows to change the words “Hey Jude” to “Geordies”.
Not even thousands of Three Lions fans serenading his teammate, Jude Bellingham, or a £116million move to Manchester City could erase the Geordie roots in Anderson. A viral clip has surfaced showing the Whitley Bay native mistakenly singing the Newcastle chant following the World Cup quarter-final win.
Elliot Anderson at the World Cup
Anderson - who Newcastle reluctantly sold in 2024 - has started all of England’s games in North America. His trip has coincided with a record-breaking switch to Man City.
While Bellingham and Harry Kane have fetched most of the plaudits, Anderson is the unsung hero for the Three Lions. He played the entire 120 minutes as England edged out Norway to book a semi-final spot against Argentina.
The biggest test of his career to date could await on Wednesday as the 23-year-old faces Lionel Messi. England are one game away from reaching just the second World Cup final in their history.
‘Painful’ - Elliot Anderson
Eddie Howe opened up about his regret over Anderson leaving after the midfielder scored a late equaliser against Newcastle in May. He told reporters: “It was something we regretted when we were doing it. We knew that would be a very, very painful transfer, one that we had to do.
“We had no choice, but it was probably the most reluctant transfer I’ll ever do, because we knew the quality of the player. We’d seen him close up for a number of years training with us. He was beginning to break into the team and he was being for me, the back end of that season, really effective in a number of different positions.
“It really hurts to see him do that against us today, he’s going to go and have a fantastic career, wherever he goes, wherever his career takes him. He’s a great lad as well, so it’s painful for us to take but he’s an outstanding player.”
