Leeds United loan flop on top-flight champions' transfer shortlist after £26m deal collapses

A former Leeds United loanee is emerging as a transfer target for several clubs.

A former Leeds United loanee who struggled at Elland Road is now a reported transfer target for a European top-flight champion.

A six-month move to Bologna proved no more promising but upon returning to parent club Tottenham, Spence has enjoyed a career revival. In two years since, The 25-year-old has played 55 Premier League games for Spurs, starting 42, and even earned a call-up to the England squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Spence has proven an important squad member across the Atlantic, often coming off the bench to see out big wins including against Mexico and Norway. And his performances could lead to a transfer this summer, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting on interest from 2025/26 Serie A champions Inter Milan.

A new wing-back is top of Inter’s summer shopping list and they have been forced to look elsewhere after a €30million (£25.6m) deal for Union Saint-Gilloise’s Anan Khalaili collapsed due to a failed medical. However a move for the former Leeds loan flop is expected to be costly given his recent form.

It’s set to be an interesting few months for Spence, whose career has really turned around since leaving Leeds in January 2024. The full-back could never get going under Daniel Farke and wasn’t helped by injury issues, with the Whites boss explaining the reason for his early loan termination at the time.

"We came to the decision it's for us as a club to end the loan,” he said. “When we make such a decision on such a day it's important I don't speak about what was missing with Djed Spence because I want to handle such a situation with class. We say thanks a lot with your service and your work, but he's a cool guy and a good kid and we wish him well from the bottom of my heart because he's a good player. I'm far away from criticise him or speaking about what is missing. This is not my style and his style.

"It doesn't take away that we think Djed has big potential and he was involved in one really good game against Ipswich when he played a major part in our big win. If it was just for that massive three points it was worth bringing him in but we felt right now it was the right decision to end the loan."
