Matias Soule has emerged as a target for Sunderland and his preference for a new destination is now clear.
Sport Witness have covered how Florent Ghisolfi is playing a key role behind a move for the Argentine. He saw him from up close during his spell in Rome, as the attacker joined from Juventus on a permanent deal in the summer of 2024.
He has faced ups and downs since then but there is belief he hasn’t met his full potential.
The ex-Juve man has contributed to 25 goals across two seasons but it could have been more, if not for fitness issues. As Roma look for capital gains, Sunderland could have real hope of signing him.
No interest in joining Fulham
Corriere dello Sport report that Soule could be one of the hottest names in Roma’s transfer window. He is a likely candidate to depart, with his agent having initiated discussions with both Sunderland and Fulham.
It is believed the ball is in the court of the English clubs. The Giallorossi want €35m to sell, with Soule having rejected moves to the Middle East. He is keen on staying in Europe and is likely to have a preference for the Black Cats.
This is because of Regis Le Bris’ side presence in Europe next season.
Il Messaggero have similar information but feel the price could go down to €30m.
They believe the 23-year-old is ‘awaiting Sunderland’, having put offers from Saudi Arabia on hold.
Player unsure about future
Coverage around Soule doesn’t end there. The Italian press caught up with him when the attacker returned to Roma’s training ground, ahead of their pre-season training.
He was directly asked about his future and the player expressed doubts about staying in Rome.
He said – via Il Romanista: “Should I stay at Roma? I don’t know, I just got back.”
Transfer gaining momentum
Evan Ferguson Matias Soule
Rome, Italy September 21, 2025: Matias Soule, Evan Ferguson of Roma celebrate victory 1-0 at end of the Serie A Enilive 2025-2026 football derby match SS Lazio and AS Roma at Olympic Stadium.
All signs suggest that everyone is pushing for Soule’s Roma exit. The club want capital gains and his entourage is already at work to find a new club.
Sunderland should be alert to this, as they will sign a player who is proven at a European level. While he hasn’t made the next step, Soule has undoubted quality.
He thrives in 1v1 situations, can play out wide on either side, while being a natural attacking midfielder. He has often come up with big performances in big games and because of his versatility, can fit into Le Bris’ system well.
