Leeds United
Young Boys and FC Basel have shown interest in Leeds United‘s Isaac Schmidt this summer.
On July 3rd, Sport Witness covered claims from Switzerland about the ‘two heavyweights’ battling for the fullback.
He is also open to leaving Leeds United in this window, in search of a regular game time.
The Whites signed the 26-year-old from St. Gallen in August 2024 when they were in the Championship. He’s played 251 minutes from 14 matches and 180 of those minutes came from two FA Cup matches.
Last summer, Daniel Farke’s side let him join Werder Bremen on loan with an option to buy. However, the Switzerland international didn’t enjoy regular minutes and injuries also restricted his game time.
Leeds United player set for transfer
The German club didn’t make his stay permanent, and the defender has to return to Elland Road. He’s unlikely to stay there and would be on the move again this summer.
That’s according to Berner Zeitung, and their title says Isaac Schmidt is close to joining Young Boys.
FC Basel have also shown interest, but their league rivals have now beaten them.
Berner Zeitung makes it clear it’s their own information that Schmidt is about to join Young Boys.
His preferred position is right-back and he can also operate as a left-back. The Swiss club are signing him primarily for the right side of the defence.
Why Leeds United man will have more minutes
Young Boys are looking to part ways with Jaouen Hadjam this summer, but the newspaper insists the Swiss defender isn’t coming in to replace him. Instead, Isaac Schmidt will compliment Ryan Andrews, Saidy Janko, and Lewin Blum.
Blum could be on the move while Andrews is working on recovering from injury. Janko, on the other hand, has struggled for regular minutes. This would improve the Leeds United player’s chances of featuring regularly as a right-back next season.
Berner Zeitung don’t mention whether Young Boys are signing Schmidt on loan or via a permanent transfer. There should be clarity on this soon.
His contract with the Whites lasts until 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €2.2m.
