Brighton have signed defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur for a record breaking £50m.
The 19-year-old Croatia international has joined on a five-year deal, with an option for a further year.
The fee paid surpasses Brighton’s previous transfer record of they £40m they paid to Leeds for Georginio in 2024.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler said, “Luka has enjoyed a fantastic start to his career - it’s one we’ve followed closely.
“Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment.
“There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and to the Premier League.
“We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”
The centre back came through the ranks in his homeland with Hajduk Split, making his senior league debut two days after his 16th birthday, in February 2023.
That made him the joint youngest appearance maker in Croatia’s top-flight history. He spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan with Polish side Radomiak Radom, before joining Belgian Pro League outfit Westerlo on loan the following campaign.
His form there earned him a move to Tottenham. Last season proved to be the one that established Vuskovic as one of the most sought after young defenders on the continent, as he shone for Hamburg.
There he won four Bundesliga Rookie of the Month awards, as well as the overall Rookie of the Season award.
That form secured his spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Year, while he has demonstrated a real eye for goal at this early stage in his career.
In 78 senior club appearances he has scored 16 goals, while he has also found the back of the net once in his six appearances for Croatia.
He is capable of the spectacular, scooping the Belgian Golden Shoe Goal of the Year award in 2024, before winning the Bundesliga equivalent for 2025.
The most recent of his international appearances came at this summer's World Cup, when he started in his country's group stage game against England.
