Brighton smash record Leeds United outlay with staggering £50m deal - Every record-breaking…

All the latest transfer news and gossip for Brighton and Hove Albion and across the Premier League

Brighton surpassed their transfer record with the £50m arrival of Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham.

Vuskovic, 19, completed his medical, signed a five-year contract and will now prepare for the new season which will see Brighton juggle the demands of the Premier League and the Conference League.

The deal beats the £40m Brighton paid Leeds United to land Georginio Rutter in 2024.

The signing is said to be a major coup for Brighton as Vuskovic is regarded as one of the most promising young centre backs in world football, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both reportedly keen.

This will be the eighth time Brighton have surpassed their transfer record since promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

Here's a look at the previous big money arrivals and where they are now.

Davy Propper – £9 million

The Dutch midfielder joined Brighton in 2017 from PSV for around £9m. He made 121 appearances for the Seagulls but left in in June 2021 for an undisclosed fee. Six months later Propper announced his retirement from football due to a lack of motivation to play. He returned briefly to his first club Vitesse but retired for a second time after a knee issue. A talented midfielder who played a stylish brand of football.

Jose Izquierdo – £13.5 million

The Colombian winger arrived from Club Brugge for £13.5m and had a promising start to his Brighton career with five goals in his first top flight campaign. He then struggled with serious knee injuries and hardly featured for the next three seasons and they parted company in 2021. Shame Brighton never saw the best of him. He's since retired from football.

Jurgen Locadia – £14 million

The Dutchman signed for Brighton in 2018 for £14m after a prolific spell at PSV. He netted 62 times with 38 assists for the Dutch team but could not replicate that at Brighton as netted six times in 46 appearances. He had a spell on loan at Hoffenheim and then FC Cincinnati before joining Bochum. He currently plays for Miami FC and featured for Curaçao in the group stages of the World Cup.

Alireza Jahanabkhsh – £17 million

Brighton once again dipped into the Eredivisie to sign the Iranian for £17m after 21 goals and 12 assist in the 2017-18 season for AZ. He went 24 matches at Brighton without a goal or an assist and first goal eventually arrived after 18 months against Bournemouth and swiftly followed that with a spectacular overhead kick against Chelsea. He left Brighton for Feyenoord in 2021 and spent last season in Belgium at Dender EH. The 32-year-old featured for Iran in the group stages of the World Cup and is currently without a club.

Adam Webster – £20 million

Albion's record signing back in the summer of 2019 and still Brighton's most expensive centre back - until Vuskovic. An model professional and a strong defender could drive forward and play from the back. He was key in helping Brighton transition to more expansive style of play. Injuries held him back but he still made 158 appearances for the Seagulls and was a hugely popular figure among the squad and fans. He left this summer as his contracted expired and is looking for a new club.

Joao Pedro – £30 million

This was a good piece of business for Brighton as they picked Joao Pedro up for Watford in 2023 for £30m and sold him to Chelsea for £60m two years later. The former Fluminense man did pretty well during his time at Brighton with 30 goals in 70 appearances before his switch to Stamford Bridge. Unlucky to miss out on the Brazil squad for this summer's World Cup.

Georginio Rutter – £40 million

Brighton upped their transfer record by a further £10m to land Georginio from Leeds. The Frenchman had a promising first campaign but struggled last season and lost his spot in the team to Jack Hinshelwood in the No 10 role. The 24-year-old is yet to fully convince and this season will be key for him and Brighton.

Luka Vuskovic - £50m

Brighton sold Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham for £52m earlier this window but will send £50m back to north London to land Vuskovic. The 19-year-old did not make an appearance at Tottenham but spent last season at Hamburg and impressed in the Bundesliga. Vuskovic was keen to join Brighton and the Seagulls clearly believe he's worth smashing their transfer record for.
