Just in: David Ornstein says Sunderland set to sign Belgian international, already flew in for…

Sunderland are set to sign a Belgian international on a two-year contract, according to David Ornstein.

It has been a slow start to the summer transfer window for the Black Cats, who are yet to confirm a new addition.

A lot of the focus has been on their current midfielder Granit Xhaka, with Chelsea pushing to secure his signature.

It appears that the Swiss international is now set to stay at the Stadium of Light, allowing Sunderland to focus on reinforcements.

Sunderland are set to be competing in Europe next season after a phenomenal 25/26 campaign, meaning they need new additions all over the park.

Regis Le Bris' side need a deeper squad in order to compete on all fronts, and they've now made their first move in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from The Athletic's Ornstein, Sunderland are set to sign Belgian international Thomas Meunier on a free transfer this summer.

The 34-year-old is set to sign a two-year contract at Sunderland and has already landed in Newcastle this morning to complete a medical.

Meunier was with the Belgian squad at the World Cup, featuring three times before they were knocked out by Spain.

The experienced right-back left Lille this summer on a free transfer, allowing him to join a new club for nothing.

Meunier offers plenty of experience

Thomas Meunier PSG

Meunier will offer plenty of experience in the Sunderland squad, having competed in Europe for large parts of his career.

The 34-year-old is also still capable of playing at the highest level, proven by the fact that he was competing at the World Cup with Belgium.

Meunier's versatility could also be beneficial, having played at right back and right midfield during his career.

Although he's perhaps not the player he once was, there's no doubt he's still capable of playing at Premier League level and could be useful for them in Europe.

As a squad option to help with depth and competition, it could be a smart signing for Sunderland.
