Leeds United issue Karl Darlow transfer statement as Manchester United move beckons

Leeds United have confirmed that Karl Darlow has left the club, ahead of his switch to Manchester United. Leeds staged renewal talks with the 35-year-old at the end of the season but could not guarantee him the number one jersey.

Man Utd were searching for an upgrade on back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and have landed on Wales number one Darlow, who will be the support act to Senne Lammens.

By virtue of his contract situation, the veteran leaves for no fee having cost £400,000 to acquire from Newcastle United during Daniel Farke’s first summer in 2023. Darlow began each of his three seasons as second choice but worked his way up to first pick during the last two campaigns.

He presided over the final seven games of the 2024/25 season to guide Leeds to Championship promotion and the title itself, after Farke dropped the error-strewn Illan Meslier.

And last season, he took over from new signing Lucas Perri as number one in January, ending the season with 22 league appearances and five clean sheets. Darlow produced a number of impressive saves, with his stop against Wolves’ Ladislav Krejci named April's Premier League save of the month.

But with the evident risk that he could start a fourth season as the second choice yet again, Darlow has opted to cross the rivalry rubicon to Manchester in pursuit of greater wages in what will most likely be his final big-money contract of his career.

Given the situation, Leeds insiders understand the reasons behind his decision and have paid testament to his character throughout his time at Elland Road. Darlow leaves the Whites after making 38 appearances and keeping 10 clean sheets, having lifted a Championship title.

Perri and Alex Cairns - who signed a renewal this month - are the only senior goalkeepers left on the books. Illan Meslier also left at the end of his contract in June, ultimately joining Arsenal as a third-choice option.

Finding a new shot-stopper is a central focus of Leeds’ transfer window. Japan and Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki is one of many names on the club’s radar but no approach has yet been made, with Newcastle also spying the 23-year-old.

Contrary to speculation in Italy, Perri has not held talks with Italian club Torino and was present for the club’s first day of pre-season. As things stand, he would be the de facto number one starter amid Darlow’s exit.

A statement from Leeds United confirming Darlow’s exit said: “Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere.

“Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road.

“The 35-year-old departs Elland Road having made 38 appearances for the Whites, playing an important role in the team’s 2024/25 Sky Bet Championship title-winning season and helping the club retain their Premier League status with survival last term.

“Thank you Karl for your dedicated service to Leeds United, we wish you and your family the best for the future.”
