Aston Villa chief confirms club's stance over Emi Martinez transfer

The goalkeeper’s future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks.

Villa chief Damian Vidagany has confirmed the club has no interest in selling Emi Martinez this summer.

The Argentina international, currently preparing to face England in Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final, is wanted by Juventus.

But the Express & Star reported last week Villa had no desire to let Martinez leave and Vidagany, the club’s director of football operations, has now gone on record with that stance.

In an interview with 365Scores, he explained: “The goalkeeper’s future is settled, he is staying with us, and we have no intention of letting him go this summer.

“The team needs his efforts and extensive experience, and he is a very important element in our project for next season.

“All the news published by the media about his departure to Juventus does not reflect the club’s true position.

“Martinez is a very important player for us, and we expect him to continue delivering his outstanding performances alongside his team-mates.”

Martinez had been expected to leave Villa last summer but his strongest suitors, Manchester United, ultimately decided to sign Senne Lammens instead.

The 34-year-old went on to play his part in one of Villa’s best seasons for decades, which culminated in them winning the Europa League.

Villa’s squad is poised for a significant shake-up with key players Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne on course to join Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

Boss Unai Emery ideally wants to keep disruption to a minimum and Martinez is seen as a big part of his plans moving forward.
