He loved the way the club do things and could see the opportunities it would give him.
That was the way in which we were being guided as long ago as three weeks or so.
The guidance we got from one source in Germany was that they would struggle to land him amid strong competition.
Well, now the 19-year-old centre-back is on board, on a deal for at least five years.
And, as he spoke at the Lancing training ground, he made it clear this was the move he wanted from early on.
He has also stressed he is a team player and expects a real battle for his place.
By adding Vuskovic to Michael Svoboda and Pascal Struijk as summer signings in the centre-back position, Albion have replaced Jan Paul van Hecke and Adam Webster (although the latter, sadly, did not play last season anyway).
It appears they have also, and this looks very significant, future-proofed for the day when Lewis Dunk is no longer the centrepiece of their defence.
That day might be some way off for the ultimate Albion warrior or it might be closer than we think. We will see.
Remember van Hecke was widely seen as the future main man and skipper until he left for Spurs.
So Albion also lost the future when he went to North London.
But Vuskovic will now be a huge part of that if all expectations are met and he has made his commitment to his new club clear.
The Croatia international said: “I read a lot about this club, I watched a lot of games and I think it’s the best possible club for a young player to raise his bar, to play good and in a good team, good facilities, good coach.
“I spoke with the coach and he tells me hiw he plays, the style he plays, and I think it is really nice to see it.
“The league I think is for sure one of the best in the world.
“I really like the project and everything and there have been no doubts about it.”
Vuskovic’s defensive attributes plus an eye for goal earned him a place in the Bundesliga team of the season (in a hypothetical back four, what it is worth).
But he is keen to stress Hamburg were all about the collective and, while he did not point it out as such, his words highlighted some similarities with Albion.
He said: “The team spirit is the most important thing.
“For sure we were not one of the best football team by financials or as individual quality but we gave every game our best, 100% each player, from the one on the bench to the one playing.
“Team mentality, team spirit for me is the most important thing.
“I will do my best first in training, and then the coach will decide what happens.
“There a lot of top players, top defenders and I have to compete from the first day.”
Albion first went in with a £30 million offer for Vuskovic at the time they were negotiating with Spurs over the van Hecke sale.
One wondered at the time whether it was all part of the same game of poker.
The word we got from a well-placed contact in Germany at that point was that Vuskovic would not go that money or anything like it, which was true, and that he would play in the Champions League.
That suggested a club in the elite UEFA competition in this coming season so Albion, holding their Conference League play-off round ticket, have done exceptionally well to land their man going on that.
We were told he would not go for less than 60 million.
Consider that as euros rather than pounds and it is not far wrong.
Albion will play a record £50 million if all goes well but he is clearly a young man they really want.
And the feeling is mutual.
Vuskovic said: “There were a lot of other clubs but as soon as I met with the coach it was always Brighton and waiting for it to finalise.”
