Former Ipswich Town striker James Scowcroft believes the Blues’ record‑breaking move for Brazilian forward Emersonn carries risk, but insists the club may have unearthed a gem if the 21‑year‑old fulfils his potential. Emersonn arrived from Toulouse last week for an initial £24 million, becoming the most expensive signing in Ipswich’s history.
Scowcroft, now a European scout with Crystal Palace, watched Emersonn live earlier this year and offered a detailed assessment of the new arrival.
A Powerful Profile — With Technical Questions
Scowcroft told TWTD:
“I’ve watched him, I’ve seen him live. He’s one who came on the scene in the second half of the season… Toulouse have always produced good, young players.”
“This guy came in, I got tipped off about his data and he has a fantastic profile. The talk would be, he’s a strong runner in behind, he can do all the athleticism.”
But he also highlighted the areas that make Emersonn a gamble:
“The counter‑balance of that is his rawness and technically his first touch isn’t great. He’s got the physicality, he’s got the profile, but is he technically good enough? Who knows?”
“Ipswich could strike gold if it all comes off, but it’s a gamble that other people haven’t been willing to take.”
Ipswich’s Recruitment Challenge
Scowcroft says Ipswich’s Premier League experience has shaped their approach.
“They admitted last time they massively underestimated how physically strong the Premier League is.”
“What I’m worried about this time is that they’re just going to sign athletes, whereas actually you need the technical level as well… It’s all about the balance.”
He believes Emersonn fits part of the brief — but not yet the full package.
“He’s got the physical profile. I’m not quite sure he’s got the technical side… A lot of people looked at him and didn’t take the gamble, but it might pay off for Ipswich.”
What Town Needs From Their Number Nine
Scowcroft outlined the demands of the role Emersonn will be expected to fill.
“In the Premier League, for a centre‑forward for Ipswich it’s all about getting you up the pitch… hold it up, but also stretching behind, winning a throw‑in.”
“Liam Delap did that very well but Liam Delap also added goals. That’s what they’ll be looking for — that kind of centre‑forward that can occupy.”
O’Neil’s Appointment Makes Sense
Scowcroft also backed Town’s decision to appoint Gary O’Neil following Kieran McKenna’s departure.
“Gary O’Neil is a sensible appointment because he’s been at the level where Ipswich are and he’s had success. He knows what it’s like to be, from the first game in August, in a staying‑up battle.”
He noted O’Neil’s experience working with elite young talent at Strasbourg:
“Strasbourg have the best youngsters in Europe… but they’re not cheap. You’re not going to get anyone from Strasbourg who is below £25 million.”
The Window: Timing, Pressure and Premium Prices
With Ipswich still active in the market, Scowcroft warned of the challenges clubs face early in the window.
“Ipswich need to get players in now, but the bargains will come at the end of the window… It’s a difficult conundrum.”
“Everybody will want a top price now and those prices will drop in the next six weeks.”
He says Town are still in a rebuilding cycle:
“Every window you’re signing seven or eight players… They are going to have to spend a lot of money to get to where they want to get to.”
