After earlier offer rejection, Newcastle United weigh up another move for 20yo Tottenham…

Newcastle United are planning to make another enquiry for Tottenham midfielder.

Tottenham Hotspur have transformed their midfield unit this summer with the big-money signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

The North London club broke their transfer record twice in a week, first by signing Mateus Fernandes in an £85m deal from West Ham, and then by acquiring the services of Sandro Tonali in a total package worth £100m from Newcastle United. The signing of Tonali has left Newcastle United with a huge void to fill, considering how crucial the Italian international has been across three years.

The Magpies have been dealt a big blow after their deal for Johan Manzambi was hijacked by Aston Villa at the start of the week. This means they have been only able to add teenage prospect Sean Steur from Ajax to their midfield after Tonali’s exit. And after missing out on Manzambi to Aston Villa, Newcastle United have identified a Tottenham youngster as his alternative.

Newcastle United eye move for Tottenham midfielder

According to The Chronicle Live, Newcastle are now eyeing up a move to sign Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray.

The Toon Army have already had an offer for Archie Gray rejected at the start of July. During talks with Newcastle then, Spurs insisted that they have no interest in parting ways with the Englishman, who was one of the club’s top performers in the 2025/26 season as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship. He won several Tottenham’s Player of the Season awards for the campaign, despite his reduced role under new boss Roberto De Zerbi.

This just shows how influential Gray was for the side before De Zerbi arrived, operating in midfield and across the defensive line. The 20-year-old chipped in with two goals and three assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, impressing the onlookers with his technical ability, calmness, maturity, versatility and leadership qualities. No wonder Newcastle are interested in signing the Spurs starlet.

However, with the N17 chiefs releasing Yves Bissouma upon the expiry of his contract, deciding against signing Joao Palhinha permanently from Bayern Munich, and could well be forced to part ways with Lucas Bergvall if he pushes for an exit amid Nottingham Forest interest, Gray is someone our club will not want to lose at any cost. The former Leeds United prospect has a bright future in the game, whilst possessing the potential to lead Tottenham.

Newcastle will want to lure Gray away from North London by offering him a prominent role under Eddie Howe, but De Zerbi requires options in his squad to cover a gruelling Premier League season. The Italian tactician may not deem the Durham-born talent a regular starter in his XI, but someone with qualities to move across the pitch and cover different positions. Whether that would be acceptable by to Gray remains to be seen.
