Newcastle United are having a tough transfer window once again, but they are now turning their attention to trying to make the best of it.
The Magpies sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona in a deal worth £70m, while Sandro Tonali followed him out of the exit door in a £100m deal to join Tottenham Hotspur, as Eddie Howe looks to rebuild his squad and avoid any sagas and distractions after last summer's issues with Alexander Isak.
But their moves to bolster the squad have been hit by two hijacks already in this window after winger Victor Munoz joined Liverpool despite agreeing personal terms with the Toon, before Johan Manzambi decided to sign for Aston Villa instead despite a bid being accepted.
Now, Newcastle are ready to make a move to bring in a familiar face to replace the hole in their midfield as a new target has emerged on their shortlist.

According to iNews, Newcastle are big fans of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes and are eyeing a potential deal for the midfielder.
Gomes, who has been described as 'insane', is likely to leave Molineux this summer following their relegation to the Championship. A move to Atletico Madrid had been all but agreed, however, an issue between the Spanish club and his agent Jorge Mendes has seen the deal collapse.
A number of clubs, including Man Utd, are understood to be keen on the Brazil international, but Newcastle are also attentive to the situation as they look at alternative options for their midfield.
Newcastle are keen to bring in an energetic midfielder who can progress the ball forward quickly, and feel that the 25-year-old fits the bill well.
He is not the only player on their list of options, but the Magpies are keen to keep names under wraps through fear of being hijacked once again. Wolves are understood to be open to Gomes' sale, and have put an asking price of around £34m on his head to find an agreement.

Gomes may not be a marquee name or a big-money signing, but he is someone who would bring quality, experience and is at a great age to help the squad.
The asking price is more than reasonable in this market, so Newcastle should have minimal negotiations to complete too. Getting a deal done quickly and quietly is the key for this, and they have the ability to do it.
With Seun Steur, Bazoumana Toure, and Ewen Jaouen already having arrived at St James' Park this summer, they need to get a move on when it comes to signing stars that will immediately improve the starting lineup.
