A former Newcastle United goalkeeper is on trial at League Two club Rotherham United.
League Two club Rotherham United have handed a trial to former Newcastle United goalkeeper Max Thompson following his release from the Magpies earlier this summer.
The 21-year-old stopper joined the United academy at the age of 11 and produced through the youth setup before earning invaluable first-team experience during loan spells with Northampton Town, Chesterfield and Scottish club Ayr United over the last three seasons. Thompson also trained alongside Newcastle’s senior goalkeepers on a routine basis in recent seasons and he was named in Eddie Howe’s squad for the Champions League campaign.

After being named amongst the substitutes in all seven of United’s league phase fixtures, Thompson saw out his time as a Magpie on loan at Ayr before Howe officially confirmed his release when his contract came to an end last month.
Speaking after a win against West Ham United in the final home game of last season, the Magpies boss said: “Of course, today was slightly different, because we're focusing really on Kieran [Trippier] and Emil [Krafth] and Paul Catterson, Max Thompson, people that will leave us who have done a great job for us on and off the pitch. Obviously, Paul's the doctor here, and they've been incredible servants to the football club, and we're going to miss them. They're a big part of our lives, and they have been a big part of our lives. In football, nothing stays the same. Everything changes so quickly. So I think that was a really nice moment for them.”
The Gazette understands Thompson has had interest from clubs in the EFL since his departure from Newcastle - and it is Rotherham that have made the first move to give the young keeper a chance to earn a new deal after taking him on trial. Thompson trained with the Millers last week and manager Alex Bruce, son of former Magpies manager Steve Bruce, is keen to continue assessing the keeper over the coming week.
He told The Rotherham Advertiser: “"He trained yesterday for the first time. We'll be looking at trying to get him in again next week to have more of a look at him."
