Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating his £35 million release clause.
The 29-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford after spending three years playing under Unai Emery.
Tielemans played a key role in Villa’s Europa League triumph last season, and scored the winning goal in the 3-0 win over SC Freiburg in the Istanbul final.
Signed on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, Tielemans made 134 appearances for Villa, scoring 10 goals and registering 25 assists.
Villa would not have negotiated Tielemans’ transfer this summer had a release clause not been inserted into his contract when he joined the club in 2023.
The Belgian, who represented his nation at this summer’s World Cup, had two years remaining on his contract and Villa were hoping to extend his deal.
Meanwhile, Villa are also set to lose Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain, also because of a release clause mechanism in his contract.
