Ederson could now be offered a new contract at Atalanta, the club have confirmed, amid growing doubts over his move to Manchester United. The Red Devils agreed a £38million deal for the midfielder in early June.

The Brazil international had been keen on a switch to Old Trafford and dropped hints during the World Cup that his move to Manchester was all but done. Colleagues at the Manchester Evening News understand that United may look to renegotiate the deal, which has become complicated after his medical concerns about a knee injury sustained last season.

And Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli has now hinted that the 27-year-old could remain at the Serie A club, expressing surprise that Ederson's switch to Old Trafford has yet to be finalised.

He said: "We were stunned [by Man United calling Ederson deal off]. Now we are working on a new contract for him."

Ederson had previously been a summer target for Atletico Madrid, though they shifted their focus towards Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes – a move that also appears to have collapsed.

United had been keeping tabs on Ederson throughout his four-year stint at Atalanta and looked set to bring him in as part of a wholesale midfield shake-up this summer.

The Reds confirmed the £50m capture of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday. The club are also poised to bring in Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans after triggering the Belgian's £35m release clause.

United's activity has gone some way towards tackling what has been a significant problem.

Casemiro departed this summer as a free agent, and Manuel Ugarte was expected to be offloaded, but the Uruguay international has been sidelined for a prolonged spell with cruciate ligament damage.

There was subsequent disappointment amongst supporters after the club's pursuit of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest collapsed when it emerged the deal would exceed £110m - a price the club were unwilling to pay.

United switched their focus to West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but the Portuguese instead joined Tottenham Hotspur after the north London side tabled a guaranteed £85m offer.

With Kobbie Mainoo still at the World Cup with England, United were facing the start of their pre-season tour against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, with Mason Mount as the sole recognised senior midfielder in Michael Carrick's squad.

Carrick's side will take on Wrexham, Rosenberg in Trondheim, Norway and Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, Sweden, between July 18 and August 1.
