Manchester United have completed the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea andYouri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
United are still looking to add one more midfielder, with Brazilian outlet Globo linking them with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes.
The Red Devils have made contact with the Brazilian over a potential move.
United are now set to face competition for Gomes with the i-paper reporting that Newcastle United are also admirers of the Wolves star.
The Tynesiders are looking to reinforce their midfield following Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham Hotspur. Captain Bruno Guimaraes could also leave for Arsenal.
United shouldn’t swoop for Gomes
Gomes, described as a ‘super talent‘ by former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, impressed for Wolves last season.
He was close to joining Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish side eventually pulled the plug on the deal.
Among midfielders in Europe’s top seven leagues last season, Gomes ranked in the 68th percentile for duel success rate and the 93rd percentile for possessions won, underlining his defensive quality.
The 25-year-old also contributes offensively with his ball-carrying ability and forward-thinking passing. He ranked in the 78th percentile for progressive carries and 55th for forward passes completed last season.
However, with United having signed Santos and Tielemans, they already have two midfielders who offer similar attributes to Gomes.
Instead of pursuing Gomes, the Red Devils should target a midfielder who can add more height and physicality to the midfield. Roma’s Manu Kone fits that profile and would be a better signing.
Standing at 6 ft 1 in, Kone would add extra height to United’s midfield. He would also cover more ground due to his long stride and athleticism.
United have already been credited with an interest in the France international, but have yet to make a formal approach.
