Newcastle United are known to be in the market to sign a new midfielder this summer and are working on alternatives to Switzerland's World Cup star Johan Manzambi.

The 20-year-old has opted to join Aston Villa instead of Newcastle this summer after not only shining for his country in North America but also for Freiburg in the Bundesliga and Europa League.

It means Newcastle are now working towards Plan B when it comes to the midfield market and they have got a number of players they admire.

At least one more midfielder will arrive following the arrival of Sean Steur from Ajax last week and that number could increase again if the worst case scenario plays out and Bruno Guimaraes joins Arsenal.

Two names that have now come to light who Newcastle admire are Brazilian internationals Danilo Santos, who plays for Botafogo, and Joao Gomes, who has shone for Wolverhampton Wanderers in recent years.

The 25-year-old joined Wolves from Flamengo back in 2023 and in that time he has impressed at Premier League level, despite suffering relegation with the Molineux side last season.

Gomes saw a move to Atletico Madrid fall through earlier in the summer and is said to be on Manchester United and Liverpool's shortlists this summer.

Newcastle are also admirers and Chronicle Live revealed back in January that outgoing recruitment chief Steve Nickson was in attendance as Wolves beat West Ham 3-0 at Molineux.

Nickson has been an influential talent spotter during his time on Tyneside and we know as well as Gomes, the Magpies have been monitoring teenage midfield star Mateus Mane and left-back Hugo Bueno.

All three players played in that game with Gomes playing an influential role in a rare Wolves win as they raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time. He was replaced at half-time as an injury precaution but certainly would have caught the eye in the opening 45 minutes.

Mane, 18, scored in that game and is highly thought of by a number of English clubs in the summer transfer market but Wolves are thought to want to keep hold of him in their Championship promotion push this season.

So, too, is Bueno, 23, although while full-back cover is a priority this summer, they may not sign a right-back and a left-back, rather a full-back who can cover both roles, depending on how far their budget stretches.
