Newcastle United are in the midst of their summer rebuild, with a busy summer already playing out in the transfer market - both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

After Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Aaron Ramsdale and Max Thompson were all confirmed to leave on the club's retained list, United have since sold both Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

But Newcastle have been busy in terms of incomings, too, securing the signatures of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims, winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax.

The Magpies are still in the market to sign another goalkeeper, full-back and a midfielder at the very least and that could lead to some more high profile departures this summer.

With that in mind, Chronicle Live have taken a look at which players could still leave the club this summer before the window slams shut on September 1.

Nick Pope

Pope has been Newcastle's number one goalkeeper for the last four seasons but he is fighting for his future this summer. For three seasons, the England international was as solid as a rock between the sticks.

But last term, big mistakes crept into his game and the Magpies are said to be looking for a more well rounded goalkeeper who is good with his feet.

Jaouen has joined but there are doubts over his suitability to go straight into the team, with the 20-year-old's first team experience coming exclusively at Ligue 2 level.

As such, the Magpies are expected to shop for a new number one goalkeeper and should one arrive, Pope is expected to move on with a move to his boyhood club Ipswich Town continuing to be mooted.

However, until that happens he is expected to remain on Tyneside and could still play an active role in pre-season.

Joe Willock

When Manzambi was expected to join Newcastle, it felt like he was direct replacement for Willock, who won't be short of Premier League suitors this summer.

The 26-year-old has been a good servant for Newcastle stretching back to 2021 and put in some big performances last season when called upon - most notably scoring against European champions PSG at the Parc des Princes.

But with Newcastle shopping for Manzambi alternatives it feels like Willock, rather than Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey and new signing Sean Steur, is the most expendable midfield option this summer.

Jacob Murphy

Murphy is now entering his tenth season as a Newcastle player and he still remains a valuable member of Eddie Howe's squad. However, the 31-year-old has 12 months remaining on his contract and a decent transfer offer could tempt the Magpies into a sale.

Everton are said to be interested in the former England under-21 international and it remains to be seen whether his time at St James' Park could come to an end this summer.

The worst case scenario

The elephant in the room when it comes to any Newcastle United transfer discussion this summer is Bruno Guimaraes' future, amid his desire to join Premier League champions Arsenal.

The Brazil international is 29 before the end of the year and feels now is the right time to explore a new opportunity although Arsenal are still yet to initiate official contact with Newcastle.

Newcastle remain adamant their captain is not for sale and the hope is Guimaraes will respect whatever decision the Magpies make should an offer come.

United have planned for Guimaraes to remain at the club and lead the rebuild. Should the worst case scenario happen and he leaves, though, then a second midfielder - to replace the Brazil international - would need to be sought.

Striker conundrum?

Many observers still feel Newcastle need another striker but with three currently on the books in Will Osula, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, that feels unlikely unless one of those players are sold.

Osula ended the season well but still feels raw and although Wissa struggled in his first season on Tyneside with fitness issues, he looked sharp in the World Cup, scoring three goals in four games for DR Congo in North America.

Woltemade had a difficult World Cup and a difficult second half of the season and despite 11 goals in his first season on Tyneside, the Germany international still feels out of place in this Newcastle squad.

Should an offer present itself for any of those three players it will be interesting to see how the Magpies respond.
