Former England and Manchester United defender Gary Neville has made a bizarre transfer claim regarding Newcastle United’s Dan Burn.
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has become somewhat of an England cult hero during the 2026 World Cup.
His substitute cameo performances against Mexico and Norway have captured the imagination of England supporters this summer.
The Newcastle defender has successfully helped the Three Lions see out two big World Cup wins with dozens of key defensive contributions despite limited time on the pitch. The result is England are now preparing to face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday evening (8pm BST kick-off).
Burn is now into the final year of his contract at Newcastle but has already spoken publicly about his desire to end his career at his boyhood club.
Yet former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville, who is also a co-owner of League Two side Salford City, bizarrely spoke about wanting to sign the 34-year-old for his team.
Burn has been a regular for Newcastle in the Premier League and Champions League in recent seasons while also breaking into the England squad and impressing in the World Cup. While he is heading into the latter stages of his career, making the step down to the fourth tier of English football would be a few steps too far.
Gary Neville wants Dan Burn
“I’d love to sign Dan Burn for Salford, honestly,” Neville told The Overlap. “He would be amazing in League Two, wouldn’t he? I mean, he’s obviously a good centre-half in the Premier League.
“Dan Burn would definitely be the best centre-half in League Two. He’d be unbelievable. Dan Burn could play until he’s 46 in League Two.
“He could play until he is 45, maybe. He might get the odd little test away from home at the odd ground, but he just looks like he should be playing [at that level].”
As it happens, Burn has previous experience in League Two, having made four appearances for Darlington in the division as a youngster. The Blyth-born defender is only the second ever player to have played in each of the top five divisions in England, the Champions League and the World Cup after former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender, Steve Finnan.
