Newcastle United’s Dan Burn and England are in World Cup semi-final action tonight against Argentina.
The Magpies have had seven representatives at this summer’s tournament, including Anthony Gordon, whose £70million transfer to Barcelona was made official on July 1. Although Gordon is now a Barcelona player, Newcastle will still reap the financial benefits from FIFA as a result of the winger representing England.
Gordon and current Newcastle defender Dan Burn are currently preparing for Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina (8pm BST kick-off). Any player involved in a semi-final match is guaranteed to be involved in the World Cup at least until July 18, with the final set to take place on July 19.
The FIFA Club Benefits Programme has allocated $250million (£186million) to be distributed amongst clubs whose players have participated in the 2026 World Cup. This is in addition to the $100million reserved for payouts for 2026 World Cup qualifier matches.
FIFA states that the minimum payout per player is $5,000 (£3,735) per day they are away with their international team due to the World Cup. The days calculated start from May 25, FIFA’s mandatory player release day up to the day after the player exits the tournament.
Payments are calculated on a player-by-player basis dependent on their individual involvement. While the minimum payout is £3,735 per day, the maximum could reportedly rise up to £8,200 per day if a player plays a key role.
As such, Newcastle are guaranteed to receive a minimum payout of around £1million, which could rise towards £2million depending on the player-by-player calculations.
Here’s a look at each player’s involvement and the estimated minimum payout Newcastle could be entitled to...
Dan Burn
Dan Burn has played a small but significant role in England’s journey to the semi-finals with crucial substitute cameos in the wins over Mexico and Norway.
Given England will play either a final on July 19 or a third-place play-off on July 18, Burn is virtually guaranteed to be away with his country for the longest possible time permitted by FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme.

Anthony Gordon
Although Anthony Gordon is no longer a Newcastle player, the club will be entitled to receive compensation as a result of his involvement in the World Cup.
The winger has started four of England’s six games so far, coming on as a substitute and grabbing two assists in the comeback win over DR Congo in the last-32. He will be expected to feature against Argentina on Wednesday night.

Malick Thiaw
Malick Thiaw made two substitute appearances for Germany as they crashed out of the World Cup on penalties to Paraguay in the last-32.
However, as Thiaw has only been at Newcastle one year, they club will only be entitled to a fraction of FIFA’s payout with the other portion going to his former club AC Milan.

Minimum payout for NUFC: £67,230
Nick Woltemade
Nick Woltemade played a prominent role in Germany’s World Cup qualifying campaign but was then left on the periphery once the tournament came around.
His only involvement was a brief substitute appearance in the penalty defeat to Paraguay, which saw him miss in the shootout.

Anthony Elanga
Anthony Elanga enjoyed a positive World Cup on an individual level as he contributed two goals in Sweden’s group stage matches against the Netherlands and Japan, the second of which helped his country secure a spot in the knockout stages, where they were comfortably beaten by France.
As Elanga joined from Nottingham Forest last summer, they will also be entitled to a portion of FIFA’s payout.

Yoane Wissa
Yoane Wissa had a historic World Cup for DR Congo, scoring his country’s first ever goal in the tournament in a 1-1 draw with Portugal. His brace against Uzbekistan also helped DR Congo progress out of the group to face England in the last-32, where they were beaten 2-1.
As another player who joined Newcastle only last summer, Wissa’s FIFA Club Benefits fee will be split with his former club Brentford.

Miguel Almiron
Miguel Almiron left Newcastle to join Atlanta United in early 2025 but, as the move took place within two years of the 2026 World Cup and during the competition’s qualifying period, the Magpies will be entitled to some compensation.
Almiron had an eventful World Cup as Paraguay reached the last-16 of the competition but his standout moment came for the wrong reasons as he became the first player to be sent off for covering his mouth while talking to an opponent during the win over Turkey. The VAR check and the referee’s subsequent red card became an early viral moment of the tournament.

Bazoumana Toure
Newcastle new boy Bazoumana Toure was away with Ivory Coast at the World Cup as they reached the last-32. While he made one start and two substitute appearances in the tournament, Newcastle won’t be entitled to any compensation with his transfer going through after Ivory Coast’s exit at the hands of Norway was already confirmed.
As a result, Toure’s former club Hoffenheim will get the majority of FIFA’s payout, while Hammarby IF could also claim a small portion.
Days away: 37
Minimum payout for NUFC: £0
Please note that payment calculations are estimates and official payout figures are yet to be confirmed by FIFA.
