West Ham need to let 20-year-old head out on loan again: Opinion

West Ham will be considering the midfielder’s options in this transfer window as they prepare for life in the Championship. WHUFC were relegated from the Premier League after finishing in the bottom three along with Burnley and Wolves and they will be eyeing an immediate promotion under the guidance of head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Orford, 20, is under contract at the London Stadium until June 2029 after he penned a bumper long-term deal back in September 2024. He has made three first-team appearances for the London outfit in all competitions so far in his career, as well as having a temporary spell away at Stevenage in League One last year.

The Hammers should look to send the prospect out the exit door on a temporary basis once again in the upcoming 2026/27 campaign. They are unlikely to be able to offer him regular game time in the second tier and he needs more exposure to senior football.

West Ham have been patient with their recruitment since they slipped out of the top flight. They are waiting for the right players to become available.

West Ham should let Lewis Orford leave on loan again this summer

West Ham are well stocked up with options in Orford’s position right now. WHUFC have the likes of Freddie Potts, Tomas Soucek and Soungoutou Magassa, among others, to pick from.

Therefore, they probably won’t be able to offer Orford many minutes at all at the moment. A departure would allow him to play consistency and get some more experience under his belt to boost his development.

Orford has been on the Hammers’ books for his whole career to date. He has risen up through their academy and has been a regular at various different youth levels.

The England youth international made his debut against Crystal Palace back in January 2025. He was then shipped out to Stevenage but didn’t make the impact he would have hoped to due to injury issues.

The Verdict: West Ham youngster Lewis Orford would benefit from loan

West Ham need to trim down the size of their squad. WHUFC’s ranks are filled with too many players which could Nuno a big headache.

Letting Orford leave on loan would free up space and would suit all parties involved. He would be a decent pick-up for a team in the division below or in League Two if something materialised.

The Hammers could then keep tabs on his progess and see how he fares with a view to breaking fully into their first-team in the future.
