Lucas Digne was considered one of France’s worst performers against Spain, with L’Equipe giving the Aston Villa player just 2/10
A ‘wave of criticism’ for Lucas Digne won’t stop Paris Saint Germain from signing him from Aston Villa this summer.
Info.fr report that the 32-year-old will be returning to his former club despite X being awash with angry Parisian fans following his performance in the 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-finals.
Aston Villa exit still happening
The website explains that PSG fans are calling for the deal for the Aston Villa man to be called off. The full back is very much in the spotlight following the defeat to Spain.
He was arguably France’s worst player in the game, conceding the penalty for the opening goal for Luis de la Fuente’s side. That was reflected in a 2/10 rating in L’Equipe this morning.
“Between his uncontrolled header and his foul on Lamine Yamal, he made two errors that led to a penalty (20th minute). He seemed to have gotten back into the game before halftime, but his second half was marked by repeated turnovers and his substitution by T. Hernandez (72nd minute),” wrote the newspaper.
Info.fr report that messages have been piling up since Tuesday evening on X. Most are calling for the deal taking him to PSG to called off.
But the deal has already been agreed. Digne has given his verbal agreement to PSG. The French giants have already informed Aston Villa that they will activate his release clause, estimated at €10m. The left-back is all set to sign a three-year contract to act as Nuno Mendes’ backup.
Aston Villa waiting
Aston Villa are already aware of the situation. Unai Emery and co are in the hunt for a replacement. PSG intend to complete the deal now the World Cup is over for the French.
The Parisian club’s management have not changed their mind. Despite the ‘wave of criticism’, they are reportedly sticking to their decision to sign the left-back.
He fits the bill for them. He’s an experienced player capable of filling the role of second choice without causing any tension. Digne has accepted that role.
The focus is now on when the deal happens. Aston Villa are waiting for the release clause to be activated. They expect that to be finalised in the coming days, unless there is a last-minute change of heart.
That’s what PSG’s fans are hoping for, but the club’s management are not considering it, despite the ‘chorus of boos’ after France’s World Cup exit.
