Manchester United Women confirm 'unique' defender's exit - report

Manchester United have announced the departure of centre-back Millie Turner, who has joined Birmingham City as a free agent.

The 30-year-old joined the Red Devils from Everton in 2018. She was one of seven players to return to the club to represent the first team, having previously played at youth level.

Turner made her debut in a 1-0 Women’s League Cup victory over Liverpool and scored her first goal in a 5-0 win over London Bees.

The English defender featured in every game in United Women’s maiden campaign, helping the club win the Women’s Championship title.

She also played a key role in the Mancunian giants’ FA Cup victory in 2024.

Turner was a regular under coach Marc Skinner until she suffered a knee injury last season. Maya Le Tissier and Dominique Janssen had established themselves as the first-choice centre-back partnership before her return.

The Everton academy graduate made 189 appearances across all competitions for Man United, chipping in with 12 goals. Only Ella Toone has represented United more times than Turner.

Matt Johnson, director of women’s football, praised Turner’s contribution to United, while admitting that she needed to leave to enjoy more playing time.

“Millie’s contribution to Manchester United Women has been immense. She is a great professional and a fantastic leader who has played a vital role in everything we have achieved over the last eight years.

“It is important that she now has the opportunity to go and enjoy more regular game time at this stage of her career. However, her impact at our club will continue long after she has departed, with her unique character having played a key role in shaping the culture of our group.”

Meanwhile, United have also confirmed Hannah Blundell’s departure, while record-breaking teenager Layla Drury has signed her first professional contract.
