Leeds United eyeing move for West Ham defender

West Ham’s preparation for life in the Championship has been far from ideal so far. WHUFC know departures are inevitable, but uncertainty around players futures and ownership has not yet allowed Nuno Espirito Santo to begin building his squad for the season ahead.

With the FIFA World Cup coming to an end, preparations are expected to speed up and departures will flow as a result. Now, according to Football Insider, defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is wanted by Premier League side Leeds United.

28-year-old Mavropanos had somewhat of a redemption arc towards the end of last season, being part of the defence that looked like they could keep the Hammers up. Despite his efforts, the team were relegated, but the Greece international’s performances saw his stock rise.

The sale of Konstantinos Mavropanos could be easy money for West Ham

West Ham are under no illusion that they need to raise funds, but they remain hopeful they can keep hold of a number of players that were important last season. Jarrod Bowen looks poised to stay, as things stand.

Mateus Fernandes leaving raised significant funds, and Crysencio Summerville expected to do so too. One more sale would leave the Hammers in a good position to add could be Mavropanos.

The Greek defender has never played below the top flight and it is unlikely he will want to. He looked like he belonged in the Premier League in the second half of last season and if WHUFC can command a solid fee for Mavropanos, the sale feels like the right decision.

In the Hammers’ relegation campaign, Mavropanos played 35 times and found the net three times for the club. The centre-back is a strong and sellable asset, so a move will benefit all.

The Verdict: Konstantinos Mavropanos sale works for all parties

West Ham need at least one more sale after Summerville departs, and Mavropanos is a strong candidate.

WHUFC have a lot of young defenders and can use their campaign in the Championship to speed up their development. Not only that, but this is an area where the club wanted to grow, and selling the Greek defender will allow them to.

The 28-year-old wants to play in the Premier League and Leeds United need someone to fill the void of the departing Pascal Struijk. It is a transfer that works for all parties.

Mavropanos can command a good fee while slotting in at the level he desires. West Ham get the one more sale they need, hopefully allowing them to finally kick their summer recruitment drive into life.
