Manchester United have confirmed that Manuel Ugarte has successfully undergone knee surgery, following his injury with Uruguay at the World Cup.

The midfielder suffered a knee-ligament injury in the first half of Uruguay's final group stage game against Spain and was stretchered off the pitch.

In a statement on their website, United confirmed that the player has successfully completed his surgery and will now begin the rehabilitation stage of his recovery.

"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Manuel well for his recovery and will be supporting him every step of the way," the club said.

Following his injury, Ugarte shared an emotional Instagram post revealing he had "hit rock bottom."

"Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country's history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life," Ugarte said.

"Hitting rock bottom will make me stronger in every sense."

Ugarte joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal rising to £50.5million ($66m) in 2024 and has scored two goals across 69 appearances in all competitions.
