Michael Carrick's side are facing a race against time to decide whether to trigger a Germany World Cup star's release clause, having been linked with him for some time

Manchester United have less than 24 hours to trigger the release clause of Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, a player Michael Carrick’s side have maintained a long-standing interest in.

The midfielder featured in more games than any other player for the German side last term, leading Stuttgart to Champions League qualification for only the seventh time in the club’s history.

The Bundesliga side are thus hoping to retain the 25-year-old’s services for another season, with their hopes set to receive a considerable boost within the coming hours.

Reports from BILD claim that Stiller’s release clause, which would allow him to leave the club for £31m, expires on Wednesday evening. **MEN Sport**understands that there has been no indication from Carrick’s side that they will trigger this clause before the deadline.

Manchester United have already signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively.

While reports have indicated that Carrick wants to add a third player to bolster his midfield this summer, it would appear that the Manchester outfit does not see Stiller as the man for the job in this instance.

After missing out on their top midfield target, Mateus Fernandes, earlier this summer, United moved quickly to secure deals for both Santos and Tielemans, ensuring they would have their services at Old Trafford next season.

Indeed, both Santos and Tielemans possess something Stiller cannot offer: Premier League experience.

Following Casemiro’s departure earlier this summer, Carrick appears ready to turn to players who have already demonstrated they can handle the intensity and demands of England’s top flight.

That said, a £31m deal for Stiller would certainly strengthen United’s presence in midfield without breaking the bank and could prove a savvy signing.

BILD claims that a club delegation attended several of Stuttgart’s home games last season to monitor the 25-year-old. But despite their long-standing interest, United have never opened formal negotiations for the midfielder.

As such, Stiller’s chance of making the move to Old Trafford this summer appears to be slipping away.

However, it has not been an entirely disappointing summer for the 25-year-old, who followed a stellar Bundesliga campaign by earning a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup squad and making his tournament debut against Ecuador in the group stage.
