The latest Sunderland transfer news as the Black Cats are linked with Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie and Timothée Pembélé closes in on a permanent return to France
Sunderland continue to assess their defensive options ahead of a campaign involving Premier League and Europa League football.
Sunderland have already added Thomas Meunier on a free transfer, handing the experienced Belgium international a two-year deal to provide depth, leadership and European know-how across Régis Le Bris’ defence.
Fresh reports have linked the Black Cats with a young Ligue 1 left-back, while two defenders who were on the club’s books last season could be set for permanent moves elsewhere.
Sunderland linked with Toulouse youngster
Sunderland are reportedly lining up a move for Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie. Football Insider claims the Black Cats have identified the 20-year-old as a target as they look to add another option on the left side of Régis Le Bris’ defence.
Methalie enjoyed his breakthrough campaign with boyhood club Toulouse last term, making 28 Ligue 1 appearances and contributing two goals and one assist. The France Under-21 international progressed through Toulouse’s academy and is regarded as a player with significant long-term potential.
Le Bris and his coaching staff have continued to monitor the French market closely since arriving on Wearside, while Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi also possesses extensive knowledge of Ligue 1. The report claims Sunderland believe Methalie is capable of making the step into Premier League football, although there is currently no indication that an offer has been submitted or talks have reached an advanced stage.
Methalie was also linked with Newcastle United in January and previously spoke openly about his ambition to eventually test himself at a higher level. Asked about interest from elsewhere at the time, Methalie told Telefoot: “It is flattering. One day, I will have to leave. I would like to play at the highest level. For now, I have to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Pembélé set for permanent Sunderland exit
Timothée Pembélé, meanwhile, is reportedly closing in on a permanent return to Le Havre. French publication L’Équipe claims the defender is set to rejoin the Ligue 1 club after spending the second half of last season there on loan. Pembélé joined Sunderland from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 but struggled to establish himself consistently in the first team.
The 23-year-old can operate at right-back or wing-back, although his route into Le Bris’ side has become increasingly difficult. A permanent transfer would allow Pembélé to continue his career in familiar surroundings while helping Sunderland streamline their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Burnley and Schalke eye Cirkin move
Former Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin is also attracting interest after leaving the Stadium of Light at the end of his contract. According to journalist Alan Nixon, Burnley are considering a move for the 24-year-old as they search for a new left-back following Hartman’s departure.
Schalke are also understood to be monitoring Cirkin’s situation, raising the prospect of the former Tottenham academy player continuing his career in Germany. Cirkin joined Sunderland in 2021 and played an important role during the club’s rise from League One to the Premier League.
