Free agent holding out for PL move – Leeds United were his desire

Hidemasa Morita

Leeds United were once presented in Portugal as Hidemasa Morita’s almost certain next destination. Two months later, the midfielder is still without a club.

The Japan international left Sporting at the end of his contract after four successful seasons in Lisbon.

Throughout the second half of last season, Portuguese reports consistently linked him with Leeds, going as far as claiming a formal contract offer had been made and, at one stage, even referring to a move to Elland Road as though it were already settled.

Instead, Morita remains a free agent.

Still waiting for the right move

According to A Bola, the 31-year-old is continuing to train individually while waiting for the right opportunity to emerge.

The report states Morita has already rejected several approaches from clubs in France and the Middle East. Rather than committing to a move quickly, he is prepared to wait for a project he believes matches his ambitions.

That patience has left him without a club almost two months after saying goodbye to Sporting.

Leeds were the move he wanted

Throughout the saga, Leeds United consistently occupied a central role. Portuguese reports repeatedly described Elland Road as Morita’s preferred destination, while the midfielder’s long-standing ambition of playing in the Premier League was said to be a major factor behind his decision to leave Sporting on a free transfer.

There were claims of a formal proposal from Leeds, suggestions Daniel Farke was driving the move, and reports that Premier League survival would remove the final obstacle to an agreement.

The transfer never materialised. That does not necessarily mean Leeds are no longer interested, but the certainty that surrounded the move towards the end of last season sure has disappeared.

Premier League still the priority

Even so, England remains firmly on Morita’s mind. A Bola report that the midfielder continues to prioritise clubs from the Premier League. Spain and Italy are also viewed as attractive destinations.

That represents a slight shift from earlier reports, which framed England as virtually his only acceptable next step, but it still places the Premier League at the top of his list.

For now, Morita appears willing to wait rather than rush into a move elsewhere. But after months in which Leeds were presented as the natural destination, the next chapter of his career remains unwritten.
