António Silva’s reported move to Bournemouth is moving into its decisive phase. However, Benfica’s immediate priority remains getting through one of the biggest matches of their season.

Portuguese reports on Wednesday suggest the Premier League club areedging closer to signing the 22-year-old defender.

While Benfica and the Premier League club are still discussing the transfer fee, journalist Sebastião Sousa-Pinto reports António Silva has already reached an agreement over personal terms with the Cherries.

A Bola describe António Silva as “close to moving to Bournemouth”, while Jornal de Notícias go even further, claiming his departure has become inevitable as the defender enters the final year of his contract and remains unwilling to renew.

There is still one obstacle. According to O Jogo, Benfica continue to demand €20m (£17.3m). Bournemouth have not yet matched that valuation despite ongoing negotiations.

Benfica caught between transfer and Europe

Negotiations seems to be in motion between the two clubs, but the timing could hardly be more awkward for the Portuguese side.

Marco Silva’s first competitive match as Benfica manager arrives next week against St. Gallen in the Europa League qualifiers. Yet the defender expected to start at the heart of his defence is simultaneously negotiating a move to the Premier League.

A Bola says there is simply no realistic alternative. Even if Benfica complete the sale in the coming days, any replacement would arrive too late. They would not have time to learn the team’s defensive routines before such an important fixture.

That leaves Marco Silva preparing António Silva and Clément Lenglet as his starting partnership despite the uncertainty surrounding one half of it.

Bournemouth negotiations leave Benfica in difficult position

The transfer itself also appears to be progressing. Jornal de Notícias report Bournemouth are prepared to pay Benfica’s €20m asking price. They describe António Silva’s departure as the outcome that now suits both club and player.

That picture is reinforced by Sebastião Sousa-Pinto. According to him, António Silva has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League side after deciding against signing a new contract at Benfica.

O Jogo are slightly more cautious, insisting nobody has yet reached Benfica’s valuation. Either way, the direction of travel appears clear.

With the defender entering the final year of his deal, Benfica are prepared to sell this summer. They do this rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2027.

Benfica are delaying formal talks for a replacement because António Silva has not officially left. But they are also planning the start of their European campaign around a defender who may not be at the club much longer.

For Bournemouth, that represents another indication that negotiations have entered their final stages, even if Benfica still need António Silva before they can afford to say goodbye.
