Juventus have Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on their radar.
It is an open secret now that Juventus are interested in Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Newly-appointed Juventus CEO Giovanni Carnevali has confirmed that the 29-year-old sits high on their goalkeeping shortlist.
Guglielmo Vicario is expected to leave Spurs after three up-and-down seasons. The North Londoners are eager to resolve the Italian goalkeeper’s future quickly, and they have set a €15m asking price, which is ‘highly negotiable’. This shows Tottenham’s willingness to move on Vicario from their books, having already signed Martin Dubravka as his replacement.
However, the Tottenham man is not Juventus’ first-choice target to solve their goalkeeping woes. Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez has been their primary target for months now, and after another stellar World Cup campaign, the Turin giants’ interest in the Argentine international is very much understandable.
Tottenham receive surprise boost to offload Guglielmo Vicario
The Bianconeri have been working toward Emi Martínez as their primary goalkeeper target this summer, with Vicario surfacing as a secondary option. However, Aston Villa have now shut down Juventus’ pursuit of the 33-year-old.
Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, insists Martinez is a ‘key element’ in the team, and the club has ‘no intention of letting him go.’ The Midlands outfit are planning with the Argentine next season, with Damian Vidagany claiming that the shot-stopper’s future is secured at Villa Park.
“Emiliano is a very important player for us, and he is a key element in Aston Villa. All the talk about him leaving during the current summer transfer window is just rumours, and we rely on him heavily in the team’s project for next season,” Damian Vidagany told 365Scores.
“The goalkeeper’s future is settled; he is staying with us, and we have no intention of letting him go this summer.
“The team needs his efforts and extensive experience, and he is a very important element in our project for next season.”
Juventus could be forced to pivot to Vicario
Villa won’t let Martinez leave this summer, and their director of football operations has made it crystal clear. And the Unai Emery-managed club also have the lure of Champions League football to keep hold of the lanky South American custodian.
This could result in Juventus pivoting to Vicario for the goalkeeping role as they are preparing to part ways with Michele Di Gregorio and potentially Mattia Perin as well. Vicario has previous Serie A experience with Cagliari and Empoli, and while he hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations in N17, he could do well for Juve.
The Turin-based club’s recruitment staff will need to move quickly to find a solution between the posts before the pre-season begins later this month, and Villa blocking Martinez’s exit could come as good news for Tottenham in their bid to offload Vicario.
