Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto was subject to recent interest from Freiburg, who are cashing in on star man Johan Manzambi this week.
It’s not been the most action packed start to the transfer window at Elland Road, but there have been confirmed incomings and outgoings.
More exits are of course expected for players that may not be part of Daniel Farke’s starting XI plans.
Willy Gnonto’s Leeds United future in doubt amid Freiburg interest
At the end of last season, Willy Gnonto’s position at the club looked quite uncertain. The Italian was clearly not a priority in Farke’s attacking setup. He made just four Premier League starts and clocked a meagre 527 minutes.
As a result, it’s hardly a shock to see at least one club weigh up a move to sign him. Europa League finalists Freiburg were credited with interest in signing Gnonto, which has not yet materialised in anything concrete.
However, with Gnonto now returning to pre-season with the rest of Leeds’ initial group of players, there could be a decision made soon.
Firstly, Gnonto likely to be frustrated as his lack of playing time. Also, Paraag Marathe’s post-season comments suggest he would be open to cashing in on a valuable asset that clearly isn’t viewed as vital to our plans.
Freiburg sell Johan Manzambi for £51m – Could ignite Willy Gnonto transfer interest
If Freiburg were suddenly in a position where they have the funds to finance a deal to sign Gnonto, that would be an intriguing development.
Aston Villa’s agreement to sign Switzerland World Cup star Johan Manzambi could be just that catalyst. It’s reported that Freiburg have accepted a €60million (£51million) deal with Villa, after a stunning hijack on Newcastle United’s talks.
Now, with Freiburg primed for an attacking rebuild, their interest in Gnonto could well intensify.
How far their interest went in the first place is hard to say. But, Leeds communicated some willingness to let the winger go when this report first emerged.
It was suggested Leeds could accept a loan-to-buy or permanent sale. Now, with Freiburg having a huge windfall in their midst, a deal could make more sense from their end.
