Eddie Howe strongly hinted at Will Osula being Newcastle United’s first-choice striker towards the back end of last season.
Will Osula is likely to start the Premier League season as Newcastle United's first-choice striker.
It is understood that the Magpies will not pursue a new centre-forward in the transfer market. Toon chiefs are prioritising other areas, namely in midfield and at full-back after losing Sandro Tonali, Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett.
Newcastle were considering their attacking options earlier this year as Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade struggled to make an impact. However, Will Osula’s impressive form towards the back end of the campaign - with six goals in his final nine games - has eased that concern.

There were suggestions that the Magpies would be open to offers for both Wissa and Woltemade. But the PSR/SCR hit to offload the duo given their remaining book value makes little financial sense.
Eddie Howe will be told to make do with the strikers - who cost a combined £134million - at his disposal as Newcastle turn their attention elsewhere. The Toon boss hinted at Osula being given the nod after he bagged a brace against West Ham United in the final home game of 2025-26.
“I don't think he could have done any more,” Howe told reporters. “When you look at what he's given us, not just the goal return, but work ethic and attitude… being a No.9 for Newcastle is incredibly difficult. There's a lot of responsibility in that position.
“Of course, Newcastle have had some iconic No.9s over the years. I think it's a great thing for a player to take on, but the responsibility is the big thing. He needs to continue to develop his game to do that over a longer period of time. Certainly, he's probably put himself in a good position to do it.”
As it stands, Osula will lead the line when Newcastle face Liverpool on August 23. Woltemade and Wissa - still on leave following the World Cup - will get the chance to stake their claim throughout pre-season.
The Magpies kick-off their Premier League preparations with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Darlington. A six-game schedule will also see Newcastle take on Gateshead, Bristol City, Valencia, Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and RC Strasbourg.
