Dan Burn can't prevent England collapse as World Cup hopes go up in smoke

**England's World Cup hopes came to a much-deserved end on Wednesday night at the hands of Argentina once again.**

This time, the Argentinians didn't need the hand of god to help them through; they just needed some shocking decisions from England's manager.

[Former Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon](https://nufcblog.co.uk/anthony-gordon-official-announcement-as-barcelona-complete-signing-30815) put England into the lead in the second half, but his goal just seemed to wake Argentina up, while simultaneously putting England to sleep.

Thomas Tuchel took Gordon off and put Ezri Konsa on with over 15 minutes left to play as if he somehow thought one goal would be enough to win the game.

Thomas Tuchel got it all wrong

Tuchel would then go on to make more defensive substitutions, including the introduction of Dan Burn, as Argentina peppered Jordan Pickford's goal, striking the post twice before eventually finding the net with a sublime Enzo Fernandez strike.

They had plenty of warnings from England, but they didn't take heed, and it was all one-way traffic until the inevitable happened.

Despite the presence of Big Dan Burn in the box, Argentina were able to score from a close-range header from substitute Lautaro Martinez two minutes into stoppage time.

England were then left with no choice but to put everyone forward and try for an equaliser. Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney were thrown on, and Dan Burn was chucked up front, but it was all too little too late.

It was all a bit too familiar

-----------------------------

As Newcastle fans, it all seemed far too familiar after watching Newcastle try to protect one-goal leads all last season and failing miserably.

It's a tactic I will never understand. If you get the goal, you've got the momentum. Go for it.

England got everything they deserved. It's into the 'Bronze Final' on Saturday now for the Three Lions, but honestly, why do they even have those games? As if France or England really want to play another game right now.
