‘It’s embarrassing!’ - Eddie Howe ‘waiting to be sacked’ at Newcastle United amid transfer drama

A former Premier League striker has questioned how long Eddie Howe will stay at Newcastle United.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has sympathised with Newcastle United supporters amid the club’s ongoing transfer struggles.

And in a passionate rant sticking up for the Magpies, he also suggested Eddie Howe would welcome an offer from another club. Pre-season preparations are underway and Newcastle’s squad is looking slim.

Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have already been sold, with Bruno Guimaraes also angling for a Toon exit. Add in the likes of Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett - who left when their contracts expired last month - and the Magpies are desperate for reinforcements.

Newcastle United’s testing summer

As was the case 12 months ago, Newcastle are struggling to attract top targets. Deals for Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi were hijacked by clubs competing in the Champions League.

Ewan Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur have arrived but all three are aged 20 or under. Targets are being worked on as Newcastle aim to give Howe the tools for a successful season.

‘Embarrassing!’ - Gabby Agbonlahor

Speaking on talkSPORT, ex-Villa forward Agbonlahor claimed Newcastle’s situation is becoming “embarrassing” as he understood the fan frustration. He said: “I look at Eddie Howe and I think, to be honest, he's waiting to be, not sacked but told, ‘Let's go our separate ways’. I don't think that, personally, that he wants to stay at Newcastle.

“If there was another job open for Eddie Howe, I think he would move. I think Newcastle and Eddie Howe have gone as far as they can. The investment that Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe thought they would have had, they aren't going to have because of these financial rules.

“I feel sorry for them because there's so many names they missed out on. I've got to read 10, 11 out. It's getting a bit draining. If I'm Eddie Howe, I’m probably picking the phone up to the sporting director, ‘Ok, we’ve missed out on another one’. Newcastle fans, ‘We’ve missed out on another one’.

“It's getting to the stage where it's getting quite embarrassing. If I'm a Newcastle fan, it’s very frustrating, especially when you're losing Tonali, Gordon and Guimaraes wants to go. It's a difficult time for Newcastle.”
