Ryedale's Jacob Render signs first professional contract with Leeds United

Jacob Render, 18, has marked another major milestone in his career in penning a first professional deal with Leeds.

A former pupil of Thornton Dale and Ryedale School, Jacob's journey to Leeds began with a period playing for local grassroots clubs, playing for the likes of Thornton Dale, Brooklyn and Scarborough Athletic.

Jacob first joined Leeds at under-14's level before progressing through the academy.

He completed his two year scholarship and featured for both the under-18's and under-21's, with his family providing the support needed to aid his ambitions.

His late grandfather, Geoff Jenkinson, was a key influence in the journey. Geoff, a former head teacher of Ryedale School, sadly passed away last September.

Speaking on his new contract with Leeds, Jacob commented: "Football has always been a huge part of my family, and my grandad was at the heart of that.

"He supported me every step of the way and his knowledge of the game was incredible.

"He was also a good footballer himself and enjoyed playing weekly 5-aside matches until not long before he passed away.

"We would often compare notes after our games. Football was something we shared and loved talking about together.

“Signing this professional contract is a dream come true, and as a Leeds fan it makes it even more special.

"Although my grandad isn’t here to see it, I know how proud he would have been.

"Everything he did helped make this possible and I will always be grateful for the role he played in helping me get here."

Helen, Jacob’s mother and Geoff's daughter, added: "Family was everything to dad. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his grandchildren.

"Jacob and his grandad shared a lifelong love of football.

"Dad was alongside Jacob from the very earliest age, playing football with him, following his progress, supporting him through setbacks and celebrating every milestone along the way – including watching him play in the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup at Elland Road.

“My dad loved football, but more than that he took enormous pride in seeing young people realise their potential.

"Some of his happiest memories were during his time as Head of Ryedale School, playing football after school on a Friday alongside colleagues and pupils.

"He was also incredibly proud to return to the school to play on the new AstroTurf when it opened last summer.

“We all miss him more than words can say, but we know he would want Jacob to embrace this opportunity with both hands, enjoy every moment and continue chasing his dreams, just as he encouraged all of us to do.”
