Leeds United statement as transfer exit confirmed with £2m fee

A defender on the fringes of the Leeds United squad has been sold.

Leeds United have confirmed the permanent exit of defender Isaac Schmidt.

The Whites signed Schmidt in a £2.5m deal from FC St Gallen in 2022 and will not book a loss on the 26-year-old, who only started twice under Daniel Farke. He spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Werder Bremen who opted against a permanent move.

A club statement read: “Leeds United full-back Isaac Schmidt has today joined Swiss side BSC Young Boys in a permanent transfer, for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old moved to the Whites in August 2024 from St. Gallen and made 14 appearances in all competitions during the club’s Sky Bet Championship title winning season.

“After finding first team opportunities limited at Elland Road, making just two starts, Schmidt spent last season on loan at German Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen, where he featured 19 times. He now departs West Yorkshire on a permanent basis, returning to his homeland with the Swiss Super League side.

As one defender leaves, another is on his way to sign. Sassuolo centre-back Tarik Muharemovic is flying into the region today to complete his medical and sign the paperwork for a move to Leeds.

The Whites agreed a £34m deal with Sassuolo earlier this week and are now putting the finishing touches on their second summer arrival. Muharemovic will come in to replace Pascal Struijk, who earlier this summer joined Brighton for £20m.
