There are growing calls for Thomas Tuchel’s head after England crashed out of the World Cup to Argentina last night.
Eddie Howe has emerged as one of the front-runners to succeed Thomas Tuchel as England manager.
The Three Lions crashed out of the World Cup last night with a 2-1 defeat to Argentina. Despite taking the lead on 55 minutes through Anthony Gordon, England sat back and allowed the reigning champions to take charge.
A quick-fire double in the closing stages ended England’s hopes and questions are already being asked about Tuchel’s future. For now, the German will prepare for the dead rubber third-place play-off game against France.
Thomas Tuchel addresses England future
Speaking post-match, Tuchel - who signed a new contract in February - dropped no suggestion that he will step down. He told reporters: “The team gave everything and we were very, very close. The team was top, we couldn’t bring it over the line, no, (but) at the moment no regrets.
“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros. I’m looking forward to that even though right now it's difficult to look that far ahead.”
Eddie Howe for England?
Since England’s exit, bookmakers have slashed the odds on Howe to succeed Tuchel. As it stands, he is 10/3 to become the next Three Lions coach.
Former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is the current favourite at 5/2. He is the only candidate ahead of Howe, with Mauricio Pochettino (7/1) and under-21s coach Lee Carsley (15/2) also in the running.
Eddie Howe on managing England
Howe did not completely shut down talk of managing England following Tuchel’s appointment in 2024. When asked if he will coach the national team one day, the Newcastle United boss said: “Who knows? You can never predict what's going to happen in management, you can never plan too far ahead. I certainly don't.
“I'd never say that managing England isn't something I'd like to do maybe one day if given the opportunity, but my focus now is Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle.”
