Arsenal might be forced to dip into the transfer market to sign a replacement for the injured William Saliba. The defender was a stalwart for the north Londoners as they won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final last season. He is widely recognised as one of the world's best centre-backs, but Arsenal could be forced to go without him when the new campaign begins.
That's because Saliba is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after limping off during France's defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-finals. He was substituted before half-time and was reportedly heard saying "my back is gone" in a worrying sign for Arsenal. L'Equipe say that he could be sidelined for up to five months, potentially ruling him out until Christmas.
It's also claimed that Saliba is poised to undergo surgery to fix his back problem, suggesting that he won't be returning to the pitch any time soon.
Arsenal can't afford to go without their best defender for five months if they are serious about retaining their Premier League crown next season.
As a result, the challenge will be to sign a replacement without breaking the bank so they can focus on their other goals, like adding a left-winger and a central midfielder.
Luckily for the Gunners, a top-class defender with everything needed to replace Saliba has just been made available on a free transfer. John Stones is currently without a club after leaving Manchester City and would arguably be the perfect candidate.
He is excellent on the ball, knows exactly where to place himself defensively and can play in multiple positions, including as a holding midfielder when required.
Stones also has plenty of experience when it comes to winning trophies, including the Champions League, which would help Arsenal their European hoodoo next season.
He remains crucial for England at international level and enjoyed a strong World Cup, playing every minute against Norway and Argentina in the knockout stages.
Stones recently celebrated his 32nd birthday, meaning he is in the twilight of his career, but it's clear that he still has plenty left to give at the highest level.
Arsenal wouldn't need him as a long-term solution, anyway. He would be the ideal signing if Saliba is ruled out for a significant length of time, but the Gunners will need to act quickly as there is likely to be plenty of interest in his signature.
