That transfer had been confirmed back in January, and the Frenchman arrives at Anfield after the departure of Ibrahima Konate, who left the club on a free transfer.

As such, it left the No5 shirt free in the Liverpool dressing room, and Jacquet, 21, will sport the number on his back this season.

He follows in the footsteps not just of Konate, but Georginio Wijnaldum before him, with the Dutchman wearing the number between 2016 and 2021 after he joined from Newcastle United.

Daniel Agger and Milan Baros also wore the No5 before the turn of the millenium.

New signing: Jeremy Jacquet

Steve McManaman, Mark Wright, Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson have all worn the number in the last few decades.

Jacquet arrives at Anfield having secured himself as a regular starter at Rennes.

For the Ligue 1 side last term, he made 21 appaearances before a shoulder injury rule him out of the remainder of the campaign.

He has five caps for the French Under-21 side, but he has not received a senior call-up as of yet.

At Liverpool, he will compete with Joe Gomez and the returning Giovanni Leoni for a starting berth alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Andoni Iraola’s defence, as the new boss looks to shape the Reds’ squad in his own image.

The Merseyside outfit have already signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna this summer, and they remain active in the transfer market to strengthen their squad after scraping into the Champions League last seasn, with their fifth-placed finish just about enough to squeeze ahead of Bournemouth.
