Aston Villa linked Facundo Cambeses
Aston Villa’s goalkeeping situation could soon become one of the club’s biggest transfer priorities. Now, reports from Argentina are linking Racing Club goalkeeper Facundo Cambeses with a move to Villa Park.
According to Argentine outlet El Crack Deportivo, Aston Villa have added Cambeses to their shortlist. Uncertainty continues over Emiliano Martínez’s future.
The report claims Racing are prepared for growing interest. They would only consider selling the 29-year-old for a fee around his €10.3m (£8.8m) release clause.
Emiliano Martínez uncertainty drives search
The key development here is the reasoning behind Aston Villa’s interest. Rather than presenting Cambeses as an isolated target, the Argentine report directly connects the move to Martínez potentially leaving after the World Cup.
While Aston Villa DoF Damian Vidagany insisted earlier this week that Emiliano Martínez will stay at the club, nothing can be considered guaranteed at this stage of the transfer window.
Villa have been linked with several goalkeepers over recent months, making it believable that recruitment staff are assessing a number of options before any final decision on their current No.1.
Whether Cambeses sits high on that shortlist is another matter.
The goalkeeper has become an important player for Racing, making 60 competitive appearances while keeping 26 clean sheets and conceding 52 goals. Those figures underline why his stock has risen in Argentina.
Transfermarkt currently values him at €5m (£4.3m). However, Racing are expected to demand significantly more because of his contract situation. Cambeses is tied to the club until December 2027, giving Racing a strong negotiating position.
Aston Villa would face competition
Facundo Cambeses has also attracted interest elsewhere. The report mentions River Plate and Bologna as clubs monitoring the goalkeeper, although there is no suggestion that either side has submitted an offer.
Of course much will depend on Martínez’s future, which remains the key domino. If the World Cup winner stays at Villa Park, there may be little need to push ahead. If he leaves, however, Villa already appear to be expanding their options.
But Cambeses is the latest goalkeeper to emerge from South America as a possible candidate.
