Millwall have paid near £1m up front for Elkan Baggott, but the deal includes a 20% sell-on clause and add-ons which could take the fee over £2m.
Millwall completed the signing of Elkan Baggott from Ipswich Town on Wednesday. He arrives as a new option at centre-back for the Lions, with the deal officially confirmed as an undisclosed fee.
However, Tractor Boys reporter Alex Jones has provided details of the finances involved. Millwall are paying an initial fee of close to £1m for Baggott, while add-ons relating to appearances and potential Premier League promotion could take the deal over the £2m mark.
If Millwall choose to cash in, Ipswich Town will be entitled to 20% of the proceeds thanks to a sell-on clause. As is commonplace with business at The Den, Baggott’s contract length has not been confirmed by the club or reported elsewhere.

What role will Elkan Baggott play at Millwall?
Baggott’s move to Millwall is an interesting one. He was mainly a cover player at Ipswich Town, appearing for the first-team nine times after coming through the academy and gaining the vast majority of his senior experience out on loan.
In fact, the Indonesia international joins the Lions having never played a Championship game. As such, it will be widely expected that Baggott plays more of a cover role in South London, offering depth as a left centre-back.
Elkan Baggott’s career stats by league
Division Games Goals Assists
League One 35 1 2
League Two 19 2 0
National League 7 0 0
There are clear upsides to the Baggott deal though. He can cover at left-back if required and is a real physical presence, with his 196cm frame making him an asset in both boxes.
Millwall’s deal for Baggott has a similar feeling to the one done for Caleb Taylor last summer. He had found Championship chances hard to come by at West Brom but thrived with increased exposure with the Lions, and the new 23-year-old will hope to emulate that success.
Baggott has already trained with his new teammates as preparations for the next season continue.
The Verdict: Elkan Baggott bolsters Millwall’s defensive depth
After coming up short in their promotion challenge last season, Millwall are eager to strengthen this summer. Their starting XI, when fully fit, is a strong one, but depth has been an issue.
Extra cover and competition at centre-back has been a must. Tristan Crama, Jake Cooper and Caleb Taylor will have influential roles, while Baggott likely serves as a backup.
His signing may well facilitate an exit for Kamarl Grant, be it permanent or temporary. It could be that another centre-back is targeted before the window’s end, or perhaps a versatile defender who can cover in the middle and as a full-back if required.
Business is far from done for Alex Neil and co as they look to improve on their 2025/26 campaign.
