Methalie A Possibility?

According to recent reports, Sunderland have been credited with interest in 20-year-old Toulouse left back Dayann Methalie. The French youth international has risen rapidly through the ranks at the Ligue 1 outfit after signing his first professional contract with the club in 2024 and breaking into the first team the following year. Standing at 6’1, the fullback possesses great aerial dominance and strong one on one defensive ability: exactly what a coach like RLB looks for in his fullbacks.

Following a successful season in the French topflight, Methalie has developed into a composed, comfortable on the ball fullback who is able to defend well in individual battles, which is reflected through the fact he was dribbled past just 0.33 times per 90. He defends large spaces well, rarely getting caught out thanks to his recovery pace which the French Youth international has demonstrated throughout the 25/26 season. That athleticism is complemented well by a strong defensive output, with the 20 year old making 55 tackles throughout his 33 appearances last year, placing him firmly on the radar of Sunderland who are looking to bolster their squad with European nights on the horizon.

Combining his defensive maturity with his athletic, progressive fullback profile, the defender managed to net two times and assist once in his first four games for France U21s. Going forward, the young defender’s game relies on his ability to carry the ball confidently, making an average of 1.32 dribbles per 90 minutes, a number which highlights his desire to get his team into advanced situations. Such ball carrying ability would be greatly valued at Sunderland, with fullbacks expected to contribute defensively, and to perform well in advanced positions of the pitch.

As for whether a move to Wearside would be realistic relies on the assumption that Toulouse will be willing to allow the young talent to leave. The Ligue 1 side have a history of developing and moving on young players when a suitable offer arrives, as shown by Bournemouth duo Amine Adli and Bafodé Diakité who both rose through the ranks of the French outfit. That track record makes Sunderland’s interest much more plausible and realistic. However, despite Pete O’Rourke reporting that Sunderland are “lining up a move to sign the highly rated left back”, there has been no report of a potential transfer fee. The uncertainty of a concrete price tag on top of the player’s rising profile suggests the Black Cats are likely to face fierce competition for the signature of Methalie.
