Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has again been linked with the England job following their World Cup exit.
Thomas Tuchel is set to remain in charge of England, despite attracting intense criticism following the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
England were denied a place in their first World Cup final since winning the tournament in 1966 after two late goals from the reigning world champions. The manner of the exit has created speculation regarding Tuchel’s future, and Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is top of bookmakers’ list to succeed the German.
Former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon got on the end of Morgan Rogers’ cross to put the Three Lions in front early in the second half before he was replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 71st minute as Tuchel switched to a back-five.

It was a decision that several high-profile pundits, including former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, claimed cost England as a late Argentina siege saw Enzo Fernandez equalise in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
England witnessed similar under previous boss Gareth Southgate, having also taken the lead in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia and the 2020 European Championship final against Italy, only to lose both.
Southgate also led the Three Lions to the 2024 Euros final, equalising in the 73rd minute after going 1-0 down before conceding again just over 10 minutes later.
It was after that game that Tuchel criticised his predecessor: “What was missing? “The identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns. “The freedom of players, the expression of players, the hunger.
“They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament, in my observation, than having the excitement and hunger to win it.”
Now Tuchel’s words have come back to haunt him.
Thomas Tuchel set to remain England manager
Despite the heavy criticism coming his way, Tuchel plans to lead England into Euro 2028, a decision that is understood to be fully supported by the English FA.
Tuchel, who was appointed head coach in January 2025, penned an extension on his initial deal earlier this year through to the 2028 tournament, which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros,” Tuchel said when asked about his future. “I’m looking forward to that even though right now it's difficult to look that far ahead.”
Eddie Howe again linked with England job
Tuchel and the FA’s stance hasn’t prevented Howe’s name from being mentioned again.
As the Premier League’s leading English manager, Howe was many people’s choice to succeed Southgate two years ago, but the 48-year-old claimed he wasn’t contacted by the FA for an interview.
"Absolutely not,” Howe said. “I think England have to do what is right for them and only they will know the processes they have gone through and the decisions they have made, and I'm certainly not the type of person that is going to analyse that.
"For me, it's about Newcastle and trying to win games, and it is hard enough to do that if you are 100 per cent focused. I will always remain that way to my work.”
Howe has come under pressure from sections of the Newcastle fanbase following last season’s 12th-place Premier League finish but retains the full backing of the club’s hierarchy as the squad undergoes a major rebuild this summer.
